Marjorie Minkin was born in Cambridge, MA. She lives and works in the Boston area and has a second studio in North Adams, MA. She received her BA from Skidmore College with a major in philosophy and a minor in studio art. After earning a Master’s Degree in philosophy from Boston University, she returned to her love of painting full time and earned a diploma and fifth year certificate from the School of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. Upon graduation, she was the recipient of a traveling fellowship that took her to Italy to see the Giotto frescos in the light filled churches of Padua and Assisi and to Southern France to visit the Matisse Museum and Chapel of the Rosary.
In 1982 Minkin attended the inaugural workshop of the Triangle Arts Association founded by sculptor Sir Anthony Caro. This experience profoundly affected her work, and she has served on Triangle’s advisory board for many years.
Minkin has had over 80 exhibitions in the US, Europe and South Korea. Her paintings are in many public collections including the Boston Museum of Fine Art; Fort Lauderdale Museum of Art; Museum of Art, Flint, MI; Tang Museum at Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs, NY; Agnes Etherington Museum at Queen’s University, Ontario, and the National Gallery of Prague. Her work is in many private collections throughout the US, Canada, Brazil, Europe, Australia, South Korea, and India.
Minkin’s art is influenced by her early experiences living near the Atlantic Ocean and the location of her studios in mill buildings next to rivers. Her daily exposure to the view of the Sudbury River when she is in the Boston area, crossing it on route to her studio in all seasons of the year and at different times of day serves as visual stimulation. Her abstract paintings on both canvas and Lexan express her engagement with light, movement and change.
